What is an agriturismo — and why is Il Vigno in the Casentino Forests one of the most authentic organic farm stays in Tuscany? Here's everything you need to know.
An agriturismo is a working farm in Italy that offers accommodation and, in many cases, meals to guests. The word is a combination of agricoltura (agriculture) and turismo (tourism) — and the concept is deeply rooted in Italian law. To qualify as an agriturismo, the farm must be genuinely operational, with agricultural activity remaining the primary purpose of the property.
This distinguishes an agriturismo from a regular countryside hotel or bed and breakfast. The food is grown or produced on the land. The setting is a working farm. The experience is shaped by the rhythms of the seasons rather than the demands of mass tourism.
Agriturismo stays became popular in the 1980s as a way to revitalise rural communities and keep traditional farming alive. Today, they are beloved by travellers seeking authenticity, connection with the land, and an escape from the over-touristed cities and coastal resorts.
Italy has thousands of agriturismi — but they vary enormously in quality and character. Some are basic farmhouses offering simple rooms and home cooking. Others are refined rural retreats with pools, spas and gourmet kitchens. The common thread is the farm itself: its land, its produce, and the people who tend it.
In Tuscany, agriturismi are particularly celebrated. The region's agricultural heritage — olive oil, wine, cereals, livestock — provides an ideal backdrop for the agriturismo model. Eastern Tuscany, away from the well-trodden Chianti corridor, offers some of the most genuine and uncrowded farm stay experiences in the country.
All produce used in our kitchen is either grown on the farm or sourced from certified organic local producers. No pesticides, no shortcuts.
Bio Agriturismo Il Vigno sits in the wild highlands of Caprese Michelangelo — a small hilltop village in the province of Arezzo that happens to be the birthplace of Michelangelo. This is Tuscany without the tourist coaches. Ancient chestnut forests, natural waterfalls, open skies and a silence that feels earned.
The property is a restored stone farmhouse and a collection of outbuildings set within several hectares of organic farmland. Il Vigno is run by Marc and Adria — a couple who have lived and travelled across continents and brought a genuinely warm, curious and international sensibility to one of Italy's most beautiful and underrated corners.
Vegetables, herbs and fruit grown on-site. Locally sourced cheeses, meats and seasonal produce from neighbouring farms.
Il Vigno is exclusively for guests aged 16 and over. A calm, unhurried environment for couples, solo travellers and small groups.
From organic breakfast spreads to legendary Farm Fresh Feast dinners — the food reflects the honest produce of the land.
Caprese Michelangelo sits at approximately 650 metres above sea level on the upper reaches of the Tiber valley, at the border of Tuscany and Umbria. The landscape here is dramatically different from the gentle rolling hills of central Tuscany — more forested, wilder, and far less visited.
The area is celebrated for its Marrone chestnuts, wild truffles, local pecorino, mountain honey and cold-pressed olive oil. These ingredients appear on the Il Vigno table with no ceremony and no fuss — simply as they should be.
From Il Vigno, guests can easily reach several of the finest towns in eastern Tuscany and northern Umbria. Anghiari is 20 minutes away — a perfectly preserved medieval hill town with extraordinary views over the Val Tiberina. Sansepolcro, birthplace of Renaissance painter Piero della Francesca, is 25 minutes. Arezzo, with its famous antique market and Piero della Francesca frescoes, is 50 minutes. Florence and Perugia are both around 1.5 hours.

Il Vigno offers a small selection of rooms, suites and apartments — all within the restored farmhouse complex. Stone walls, wooden beams and terracotta floors are balanced with high-quality bedding, ensuite bathrooms, kitchenettes and high-speed Starlink WiFi. The number of guests is kept intentionally small to preserve the quality and intimacy of the experience.
For groups and families, it is also possible to book the entire farm exclusively — all rooms, all facilities, and the full attentions of Marc and Adria for your private event or celebration.
All stays include access to the pool and gardens. Farm-to-table breakfast is available daily, and the Farm Fresh Feast dinner runs Wednesday to Saturday from 19:00.
